A spur of the moment invitation on Valentine’s Day, led to a warm adventure on a cold day. We met with our friends at Bernard Katz glass studio, they shared in the glass process, gave a little demonstration and then we tried it out for ourselves. I will take you on a little visual journey..
Safety demonstration of course.
The rods were placed in a furnace and dipped in molten glass. After the rods were removed from the heat, it went through a little water bath so we could hold the rod. Then the fun part, twirling the hot glass and stretching it out to make a form.
Letting gravity do most of the work
After a small demonstration of the sculpting tools, we tried working the glass. Very hot stuff! The temperature ranged over 1000 degree fahrenheit but the kiddo was not afraid to sculpt the molten glass.
Glass sculpting bench and tools
The glass had to be reheated often as it began to cool down during the process.

Samples of our finished pieces after a day of cooling.
Not bad for our first time!
You can watch the professionals in action. This short video will demonstrate the glass blowing process.
